What actually makes a small business site convert

Most local sites lose people in the first screen. Here is the short list of things that move enquiries, in the order they matter.
The single biggest predictor of whether a local business site produces enquiries is not the design. It is whether a visitor can tell, within one screen, that they are in the right place and what to do next.
That means three things above the fold: what you do, where you do it, and one unmistakable action. Everything else — the story, the gallery, the team page — earns its place further down.
The second predictor is speed on a phone over a mediocre connection. A site that takes six seconds to become useful loses a meaningful share of visitors before it has said anything at all.
The third is trust signals placed near the action rather than on a separate page. A review, a certification or a photograph of the actual premises does more work beside the contact form than it does anywhere else.
